A gap of a couple of meters between lights gives a pleasing rhythm of glow and shadow along a path. Closer spacing reads brighter and more formal; wider reads softer. With six lights you can experiment freely.

Yes, a light sensor switches them on at dusk and off at dawn. After the first placement there is nothing to operate; they simply keep their own schedule with the sun.
